In this book – the story Little Orchard, the story Iskra and – the title play Berdichev, its action begins in the summer of 1945, the Great Patriotic War has just ended. Friedrich Gorenstein (1932-2002) was practically not published during the Soviet years. Lacking hopes for a literary future in the USSR, he emigrated, lived and worked in Germany. Abroad, Gorenstein was published and translated into many languages. The writer himself called his work “revenge against the totalitarian system.”
