The novel “The Emperor and the Rebbe” by the prominent Jewish writer Zalman Schneur (1887-1959) covers the period from the first partition of Poland to the flight of the French from Moscow. The heroes of the novel were three Russian emperors, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Old Rebbe – the founder of the Chabad movement Rabbi Shneur-Zalman from Lyad, the Vilna Gaon – the outstanding spiritual authority of Orthodox Jewry Reb Eliogu ben Shloime-Zalman.
