Description

This book describes the history of the Russian Jews from the first century all the way to the Russian Revolution of 1917.

This book talks about many historical happenings of the time. Crusades in central Europe, Kiev, and the resettlement of Jews to Poland, and so many other tragic, difficult, yet interesting historical time periods. Among the many different events are the horrors of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, who slaughtered an immense number of Jews in the seventeenth century. The book also includes less horrific moments in history, such as the rise of the movement of the Baal Shem Tov, and Jews who were close to the rulers of Russia, such as Ekaterina II, Paul I, and Alexander I. As well as a description of the War of 1812 and how it affected the Jews, it also includes Jews who became a part of the Russian Empire. Violent christenings and cantonists, the cruel forcing of Jewish boys into the Russian army, as well as Jewish life under Nikolai’s I reign, are among some of the other topics in this book. Great reforms of Aleksander II, and pogroms of 1881-1882, and Jewish emigration from Russia are also described in this book. Toward the end of the historical period that these books cover are movement to Palestine, pogroms of 1903-1905, World War I and the February revolution.
